A bloodied emergency room doctor attending former President Donald Trump’s Pennsylvania rally during the shooting on Saturday described his attempts to help an audience member who had sustained a “headshot.”

Shots rang out during live coverage of the rally, which quickly descended into chaos as the crowd scrambled for cover and Secret Service agents moved swiftly to protect Trump. Butler County District Attorney Richard A. Goldinger confirmed to the Associated Press that both the shooter and an attendee at have died with another audience member seriously injured.

The unnamed doctor told CBS News how, having heard the gunshots, he tended to a man who had fallen “between benches” and delivered emergency chest compressions.

The doctor said: “I heard the shots. I thought it was firecrackers to begin with. Somebody over there was screaming: ‘He’s been shot! He’s been shot!’ So I made my way over. I said, ‘I’m an emergency department physician. Let me help you.’ The guy had spun around, was jammed between the benches. He had a headshot here [the side of his head]. There’s lots of blood and he had brain matter there. And so I got him…”

He paused as the sound of a helicopter could be heard in the background and added: “There’s a helicopter coming in to get him.”

The doctor continued: “So I got… the people there were really helpful. I got them up on his back. Then I did CPR, did chest compressions…”

The reporter asked: “Was there only one person shot that you saw? One person?”

The doctor replied: “I was the only one that did it.”
